Kitesurfing

Summer is here and with it comes endless sun, fun, and much deserved relaxation after a tough year for us all. Summer has a little something for everyone; tanning and enjoying the sound of the waves is perfect for those needing to loosen up a bit, but if you’re looking for a fun, adrenaline pumping activity, kitesurfing is perfect for you! However, just like any other sport or physical activity we do for fun, there are always going to be questions and concerns raised over the safety of it; kitesurfing is no different. In this article we are going to wade past the myths and rumors to give a definitive answer to an age-old question: How dangerous is kitesurfing really?

Knowledge is Safety

Like most things in life, sports and physical activity are furthered by an individual’s skill level and kitesurfing is no exception to this rule. Most parents would not remove their child’s safety wheels without first making sure they are completely able to operate the bicycle; this same concept applies when learning to kitesurf. Most kitesurfing accidents result from untrained individuals putting themselves into situations that they shouldn’t be in. Instead of throwing yourself into the fire, consider working with a licensed instructor for a longer period of time to ensure that you have knowledge necessary to operate a kiteboard correctly and safely.

Before attempting any serious kitesurfing, it’s a great idea to purchase a training kite and scope out how it feels operating in the wind. Give yourself a few good days of training to get this feeling down before you put yourself in any dangerous situation.

So, we’ve nailed down that kitesurfing isn’t inherently dangerous, but you need a good grasp of the board and working knowledge of the sport before you make any serious attempt at going out by yourself or leading others on a trip. While yes, there have been accidents, a fully trained and prepared kitesurfer can expect an exciting, adrenaline pumping surf out in the sun!
